Deep dark cherry colour. Bright fresh aromas with a delicate leafiness increasing that fresh first impression, plus an attractive dustiness – more raspberry than cassis but there’s darker fruit there too. Some sweet vanilla from the oak but not overpowering. Satisfying combination of rich fruit and freshness and a more savoury and lightly spicy character than I expected from the aroma. Tannins are dense and smooth. Not especially long but a harmonious whole and a nice chewy finish. I’d prefer a bit less oak but this may be the stage of the wine or the fact that this is a barrel sample. (JH)
